I have to admit I’m amazed.
I simply didn’t realise you could make a jam out of fruit without adding any kind of sugar at all.
Apparently it’s fairly easy to do with apples and they call the result ‘apple butter’, which is an apple puree so thick it can be spread just like jam, but of course, with far fewer calories.
Biona have a version which is a combination of apples and pears to make a rich and tangy Organic Apple and Pear Spread.
No added sugar or sweetner, no pectin or coagulator of any kind – just good spreadable fruit. Who knew? But, it turns out people have been making apple butter for centuries.
