Nutrition? We’re packing it

If you’re on the hunt for nutritious food then try teff flour.

GoodnessDirect priovides not only the brown teff, but it’s organic too.

Teff is nutritious because it provides for fibre than any other grain. It is also full of minerals with 17 times more calcium than wheat or barley.

Goodness Prepacks supply lots of organic ingredients for your kitchen cupboard, from roasted organic buckwheat to whole organic cashew nuts and everything in between such as organic bran flakes or organic black turtle beans.

Snacking? Here’s a filling healthy option

You know how it is…

When you’ve had your dinner an hour ago, but you’re still hungry.

You really shouldn’t… The chocolate is calling. It’s a choice between that, some yucky leftovers in the fridge or bloating out on a bowl of unnecessary cereal.

eatnatural
Crisp crunchy toasted cereal

Another choice would be to grab a bar or bowl of Eat Natural’s healthy ingredients (they do both healthy cereals and cereal bars).

Taking an ‘allow nothing dodgy’ approach to life, Eat Natural’s latest high fibre creations mix carbs and crunchiness with nuts, seeds and possibly fruit to give you a truly satisfying snack experience.

You gotta love Eat Natural for what they do. Take their Almonds and Apricot cereal for example: lots of sweetness, crunchy toasted oats and a little shredded coconut and honey.

Or sample Brazils and Sultanas with its added pumpkins seeds. There’s even a crunchy fruit-free Nuts and Seeds version featuring a range of almonds, hazelnuts, linseed and sunflower seeds.

The simple rule is, when you’ve gotta snack, give yourself a healthier choice.

Cola flavoured raisins – that’ll be Nakd

I just made a connection.

Earlier this week I was writing about Trek’s new protein flapjacks.

What I didn’t realise is that the same guys who make these are the ones behind the Nakd brand! (For some reason I thought Trek were American -sorry!)

Nakd bars are enormously popular among the health conscious, with their varied range of flavours such as mocha, ginger bread and apple pie, they have a soft, chewy texture that will fill you up till your next meal.

nakd raisins
Kids love these!

Using only raw ingredients made from a mixture of fruit and various nuts, Nakd bars also have no added sugar or syrup, and the bars are vegan, dairy free and gluten free.

But it doesn’t stop there, Nakd also make fruit flavour infused raisins. There’s lime, pineapple, orange, lemon, cherry and erm, cola!

And believe me, they’re tasty enough to make even the toughest raisin-phobe change their mind.

Blueberry Bircher muesli recipe

If you want to get back to the healthiest of cereals you could try the Bircher muesli.

Berry breakfast
Overnight Oatmeal

First developed by a Swiss doctor back in the 1890’s, this easy, super healthy breakfast can be mixed together the night before, then left in the fridge to soak in a plastic container or smaller individual ones if that suits you better.  Stir in grated apple and top generously with blueberries, honey and nuts and you’re good to go.

Serves 6
Preparation time: 10 minutes

500g (1lb 2oz) tub Greek yogurt
200g (7oz) rolled oats
40g (11/2oz) wheat germ
40g (11/2oz) desiccated coconut
50g (2oz) hazelnuts, toasted and roughly chopped
200ml (7fl oz) pressed (cloudy) apple juice
To serve per portion
½ Granny Smith apple, cored but not peeled, coarsely grated
50g (2oz) Chilean blueberries
1 tsp runny honey
Little ground cinnamon
Few extra chopped hazelnuts, optional

1. Mix the yogurt, oats and wheat germ in a bowl then stir in the coconut, toasted hazelnuts and apple juice. Transfer to a plastic container, clip on the lid and chill overnight in the fridge.

2. When ready to serve, stir in grated apple and a few blueberries then spoon into dishes, top with extra blueberries, a drizzle of honey, a sprinkle of ground cinnamon and a few extra nuts, if liked. The remaining soaked muesli will keep in the fridge for 2-3 days, just add a little apple juice if needed, as the oats will continue to swell.

Cook’s tip
If you are not a fan of nuts or have a nut allergy then simply leave them out. If you are allergic to yogurt made with cow’s milk then use goat’s milk or soak in soya milk instead.

Eat Natural photos by lots of devoted snack bar fans

eatnat

It seems folk can’t get enough of the Eat Natural bars.

There’s lots of fan photos out there.

It’s not so surprising considering all those natural ingredients they insist on using.

And with flavours like Vanilla, Plum & Peanut or Almond, Apricot & Yoghurt it’s a wonder they’re not even more well known.

Thankfully, there’s loads of flavours available from GoodnessDirect, and most likely lots more photos of empty wrappers.

My secret love of health shops

I love health shops.

The first thing I noticed as a child would be the smell upon entering…

Either an earthy air of wholesomeness or an atmosphere rich with the aroma of exotic dainties.

There was always something new and a little different to try in there.

Nowadays, there are so many new exotic foods to try you’d need a whole warehouse to stock them, which is where GoodnessDirect.co.uk comes in! While we’d encourage you to shop local, we actually stock a lot of healthfood shops and it’s still generally cheaper  to order online than pop out in the car.

GoodnessDirect is still replete with new exotic foods. For example, has anyone heard of Inca Berries?

Inca Berries
A supersweet superfood

Inca berries

Another fruit to add to the supefood list, The Inca Berry is sweet to the point of being tart and can be eaten dried or baked into biscuits cakes (or combined with cheese if you’re the adventurous sort). They are, of course, full of antioxidants, high in fiber (more than prunes) and a great source of vitamin B12 – to the point that Inca Berry lovers often report increased energy and mental sharpness.

Inca Berries are just one of many dried fruits packed for retail by Eat Goodness, the Goodness range also includes nuts and exotic flour.

Just the sort of thing you’d expect to find in a good health food shop.
