It makes a useful alternative to fish oil as it is believed to help lower cholesterol and blood pressure. However, it is not yet conclusive that linseed can help with arthritis as fish oil can.
Linseed is a very rich source of lignans which have antioxidant properties. Lignans are of great interest to the medical world at the moment as it is thought that they may be able to help control certain diseases.
The seed is also great for those who need more dietary fibre. It can be taken with yoghurt, breakfast cereals, milk, fruit juice or sprinkled over soups, vegetables, salads or desserts.
Linusit are proud to be producers of high quality linseed (or flaxseed). It is available in both organic and premium seeds and is cherished for its high nutritional value. It’s also gluten and lactose free and a great source of omega-3 for vegetarians and vegans.
There was a time when cod liver oil was feared by children the world over. Forced to gulp down horrid spoonfuls of the vile tasting liquid, they would do anything to avoid it, and all in the name of health.
But life has changed a lot since then. Most importantly it was realised that the Omega Fats in fish oil are excellent for strengthening the brain and heart and decreasing blood pressure. Add to this the benefit of being able to swallow doses in small capsules (thus helping with the taste) and children everywhere began to breathe a smile of relief.
Now Seven Seas are taking the revolution one step further combining a range of healthy oils, vitamins and minerals renowned for their beneficial properties. They’ve got some snazzy names too:
– Fish Oil blended with Biotin and Zinc for healthy hair, skin and nails. Perfect Harmony
– Fish Oil with Primrose and Starflower Oils for hormonal balance. Healthy Heart
– Fish Oil with Garlic and Vitamin B1 for the cardiovascular system. Energetic You
– Fish Oil with B vitamins and CoQ10 for daily health and vitality. Immune Defence
– Fish Oil with Vitamin C and Zinc keeps you fighting fit. Flexible You
– Fish Oil with Calcium and Vitamins D & K for healthy bones, muscles and joints. Active Mind
– Fish Oil blended with Ginkgo and Zinc for mental performance.
With advances like these, once tormented children can say hello to a daily dose of health without fear.
Every so often a new variety of licorice comes along – the longevity of this sweet never ceases to amaze me.
Three Bears confectioners believe they’ve found the holy grail in the quest for the perfect licroice by combining natural licorice extract with a touch of fruit juice to create a black licorice with a unique taste and texture. True to their name it’s not too hard or too soft, but “just right!”
Furthermore it has no hydrogenated fats or articifical colourings or flavourings and contains no animal products either so vegetarian and vegan Goldilocks will be pleased.
I’m not a big drinker of herbal teas but recently my need to avoid milk has caused me to branch out a bit. I now have chamomile, peppermint, green tea, lemon & ginger to add to my list of likeable infusions.
But as I sit here and sip Higher Living’s Chamomile and Vanilla tea, I have to confess, it’s one of the best brews I’ve had of any hot beverage, ever. I’ve enjoyed a fair few brands of chamomile now and this surpasses the lot.
Is it because it is organic? Or is it the intriguing selection of flavours used (oddments of fennel, chamomile, lemon, orange, lime, licorice, vanilla), which blend to make such an inspirational cuppa?
Higher Living have collected together a range of teas such as cinnamon tea, licorice, or sweet chilli. The packaging is excellent too – The Best of British pack offers a timely nod to our Queen’s upcoming Diamond Jubilee. Now, I wonder if she is partial to a bit of chamomile?
My wife will tell you that blood is the body’s vital source of energy. 4.5 to 6 litres of the red liquid are pumped through an adult’s veins without ceasing. This is vital because the red blood cells transport oxygen around your body, but to do this they need one particular substance: iron.
My wife suffers from iron deficiency. Iron loss occurs every day though the body’s organs and in women as part of their regular cycle. What is more, pregnant women and breast-feeding mothers need even more iron.
If you frequently feel tired or listless, or if your skin is pale, it may be that your body also has an unbalanced iron supply (though there can be other reasons). Without iron, your blood cells and organs suffer, there is nothing to kickstart your energy metabolism and so no vital energy.
A pleasant solution
Many people turn to iron tablets, but my wife complains that these cause unpleasant side effects (I won’t go into the details – you can read them here). So now she’s trialling something called Iron Vital F which offers a more pleasant means of replenishing the body’s iron deposits.
As a liquid it contains iron in an organic form which is readily absorbed by the body. This is combined with vitamin C and B to enhance the effects of the iron. Perhaps best of all Iron Vital F has a great tasting natural fruit flavour. Because it is made from fruit and vegetables it is non-constipating and suitable for vegans. It is also yeast, gluten and lactose free, made without preservatives or alcohol.
